Barca takes place between 240 and 182 BC during the wars between Carthage and Rome. Hamilcar, dynamic leader of his warrior family is immersed in a civil war brought about by the political shortcomings of the leaders of his country. His son, Hannibal, surpasses his father while learning war and politics from him. Out of tragedy, and before he believes he is ready, Hannibal becomes one of history's greatest war tacticians. Barca, their family name means lightning for their power and way of striking their enemies. Rome is that enemy. This is a time before Rome has established its grip upon the ancient world, a time when but for one general, the world might have hailed from North Africa. Through heroic myth, music, transcendant dance, battle scenes and an inspirational crossing of the Alps, the story of the Barca family unfolds both heroic and tragic.
